In Madhya Pradesh, there are different dynasties that ruled over Madhya Pradesh in our Ancient times. The major dynasties in ancient Madhya Pradesh are listed below in different Eras they ruled in different periods of time.

Ancient History of Madhya Pradesh for MPPSC

Major dynasties of MP in Ancient times ruled and the major events happened during ancient times.

Prehistoric Era

Humans of that time lived near rivers and caves. Tools were made from stones and bones.

MP prehistoric sides

Mandsaur, Adamgarh, panchmari, Maheshwar, Chanera, Nemawar, Raisen, Sagar, Hoshangabad, and Bhimbetka.

Stone Age

Hand Axes, Scrappers, were used

Evidence found - Near Narmada river, Chambal, Parvati, Betwa, Benganga, river valleys.

Areas - East Nimad, Shahdol, Mandsaur, Hoshangabad, Rewa, Sehore, Ujjain, Mandla, Chattarpur, and Chindwara and Neolithic age sites are Eran, Jabalpur, Sagar, Damoh.

Chalcolithic age

Contemporary to Mohenjo-Daro civilization and Chanhudaro civilization on the banks of Narmada river.

Places Excavated - Kaytha, Eran, Navdatoli, Avara, Daandwala, Besnagar

Ancient History of MP

Vedic Era  

Started with the arrival of Aryans.

Ikshvaku clan

It was established by Manu's son Ikshvaku who ruled Dandakaranaya.

Haihaya Dynasty

Established by the grandson of Yadu.

King Mahishmat established Mahishmati on the banks of Narmada.

This dynasty established Janpads block Tundikar(Damoh), Tripuri, Dashmaran(Vidisha), Anoop Nagar (Nimad), and Avanti.

Epic Period

M.P. was covered with dense forest, Vindhtas, andcSatpuras on the south of Narmada has its description in Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Shri Ram's son Kush became ruler of south Kaushal.

In political view Region between Yamuna and Godavari was part of the Ayodhya dynasty.

Mahabharata Period - 

In Mahabharat, Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand were sided with Pandav which includes Chedi, Vatsa, Kashi,  Matsya, Dashain.

The state that sided kaurav were Mahishmati, Avanti, Bhoj, Vidarbha, and Nishad tribe of Vindhyanchal.


Mahajanpadas -

According to Buddhist literature and Jain text, there were 16 Mahajanpadas.

Mahajanpadas in M.P. - Chedi and Avanti.

Chedi Mahajanpada 

Capital - Shaktimati.

Present-day - Bundelkhand and adjoining areas.

Avanti Mahajanpada

Capital North Avanti - Ujjaini.

Capital of South Avanti - Mahishmati.

Region of Avanti - Western and Central Malva.


Ancient History after Mahajanpadas and Dynasties of MP

Mauryan dynasty 

Around 320 BCE Chandragupta Maurya established the Mauryan dynasty.

He freed India from the Greeks. He overthrew Nanda dynasty and took the title of devnampriya.

Rocks edicts founded: Language- Pali Script - Brahmi 

Major rock edicts of the Mauryan dynasty are

  • Pangarariya(Sehore)
  • Roopnath of Jabalpur
  • Gurjara(Datia)
  • Saro Maro(Shahdol)

Stupas- Sachi stupa,Behrut stupa, Satdhara, vidisha, Sunami, Bhojpur, Maksi, Datiya.

Awanti was cente of making clothes during the Mauryan dynasty.


Post Mauryan Period 

After the decline of Mauryan Shung and Satvahanas ruled MP.


Shung dynasty

Last Mauryan ruler Brihadrath was killed by Mauryan commander in chief Pushya Mitra Shung.

Son Agnimitra established Vidisha as their capital.

Garud stambh was build during the period of the 5th ruler of the shunga dynasty Bhagbhaora.

Shuga defeated the Greeks on the bank of Kalisindh.

 Satvahanas Dynasty -

Satvahanas ruled after the Shunga dynasty.

Simuk established the Satvahana dynasty after killing Susherman.

Gautami putra Satkarni have been found in Ujjain.

He defeated Saka ruler Nahapan of Nashik and ruled from Malva to Maheshwar.

Yaghshri Satkarni coins have been found at vidisha and Dewas.

Sakashtrap Dynasty

They established their rule in Mathura, Ujjain, and Punjab.

Kardamak Dynasty- 

Kardamak dynasty was established by Yashomati and his son Chastan.

they ruled over Ujjain.

Famous ruler - Rudradaman

He was a Sanskrit scholar.

He issued dated Silver coins.

Vikramaditya and Gupta empire annexed Ujjain after Rudrasingh.

Kushana dynasty -

Tribes of china.

The first was Kujul coins were found at vidisha.

Kaniska was the first to introduce Saka Samvat.

Naag dynasty 

Founder - Virish Naag

Capital - Vidisha

The last ruler of this dynasty was Manpantinag.

Samudragupta established the Gupta empire by defeating the last ruler of the Naag dynasty.

Bodhi Dynasty - 

Coins found from Tripuri.

Magha dynasty 

Caves recovered from Bandhavgarh(Umariya)

Vakatak dynasty 

Vakatak dynasty was Established by Vidyasakti in Vidisha.

Sridhar was defeated by - Samudragupta.


Edicts of this dynasty - Elephant edict Patna and 

Inscriptions - Vyagraraj (Satna) was major inscriptions of this dynasty found in MP.


Gupta Period 

Founded by - Shri Gupta.

Samudragupta and his 9 republics of Aryavartas(regions)

  • Karparik(Damoh)
  • Vidisha(Sunkanik)
  • Malwa

Samudraguptas swabhog Nagar was known as Eran(Sagar).

Chandragupta || 'Vikramaditya' defeated Salad and made Ujjain as capital.

He had 9 gems in his court -

  3. Ghatkarapara
  4. Kshapanaka
  5. Shuk(Sanku)
  6. Kalidasa
  7. Varahmihir
  8. Vararuchi
  9. Vetala-Bhatta

Udaigiri caves made under his region.

Huns attacked Skandagupta.

Huns were defeated by Yashodharman.


Parivrajak dynasty

First king Devdaya(Hastin).

Ruled over Bundelkhand.

Copper plate inscriptions - Khoh and Macchgava.


Uchhkalp dynasty

Region - Satna

Padata Kingdom 

Region of Padata kingdom was - Amarkantak.

The first ruler was - Jaibal, and the Last ruler - Bharat pal.


Shail dynasty - 

Region - Mahakaushal region.

First ruler - Shivsharan, Last ruler - Jayvardhan.

Inscriptions found - Radholi copper plate inscriptions.


Rashtrakutas - 

Their two branches were - Betul to Amravati and Manyakheta.

Copper plate inscriptions - Multai and Titrikhedi(Betul).


Gurjara Pratihara 

Established by Harishchandra in Rajasthan. And branch was set up in Ujjain during Naagbhatta and repealed Arabs.

Arab traveller Sulaiman came during the region of Mihir Bhoj Son of (Rambhoj).

Yashpal was the last ruler.


Chandel Dynasty 

Nannuk established the Chandel dynasty at Mahoba.

Bundelkhand was named as Jajakbhukti.


The maximum buildings of Khajuraho ( 950 - 1050 AD) were built by Yashovarman.

Dangdev established Kandariya Mahadev, Chitra Gupta temple and Vaidyamath.

Baidyanath temple, Jinnath temple, Parasavnath temple.

Dangdev built Chitragupta, and Jagadamba Temple.

Vidhyadhar protected the temple from Mahmud Ghaznavi and established the Kandariya Mahadev temple.

Kirtiverman introduced gold coins and built kirtisagar.

Inscriptions of Mandanverman - Khajuraho, Jaigarh(Panna), and Chattarpur, 

48 Coins found from Rewa

Inscriptions of Parmardideo(Grandson of Mandanverman) - From Ahad, Simra, Charkari(Sidhi), Mandanpur.


Kalchuri dynasty 

Kokala 1st was the Founder of kalchuri dynasty.

Ruled over - Mahishmati, First ruler - Krishnaraj.

Inscriptions of Kalchuri dynasty - Bilhari inscriptions (Jabalpur)

Karnadev along with Chalukya king Bhima killed Parmar ruler Bhoj.


Tomar dynasty 

Established by - Virsingh, in the 14th Century.

Raja Suraj Sen built the Gwalior Fort in 565 AD, also known as 'Gibraltar of East'.


Raja Mansingh built the saas-bahu temple and Gurjari Palace in Gwalior.

Mansingh flight wars with Bahlol Lodhi, Sikandar Lodhi, and Ibraham Lodhi.

Ibrahim Lodhi took over Gwalior after defeating Vikramaditya (son of Mansingh).


Gohil dynasty

Inscriptions - Jeeran inscription Mandsaur.


Kachhap dynasty - Established in Gwalior and Shivpuri.

The last ruler - attacked by Mahmud Ghajanavi.


Parmar dynasty

Rudra Pratap bundela - Founder

Bundela dynasty was earlier in Kashi (UP) and were they called as chandravanshi.

Capital - Orcha in 1531

They were contemporary of Mughals.

veersingh bundela killed Abul Fazal on the order of Jahangir.

Chatrasal son of champat rai fought with Aurangzeb.

Kavi Bhushan and Keshavdas were court poets of Chatrasal.

Jejakbhukti was renamed as Bundelkhand again.

Baghel dynasty

They were the sub-clan of Solankis of Gujarat.

ruled over Rewa.

Tansen was the court poet of Ramchandra Singh Baghel and later gifted to Akbar.

last ruler was Martand pratap singh.
